News & Maps

Prince George’s County Police (PGPD) have produced monthly crime maps to illustrate reported crime or police-initiated actions within City limits.  At the end of each month’s set of maps, there are statistics to show trends month-to-month, and soon year-to-year.

For any questions, please contact publicservices@collegeparkmd.gov.

Please note: the data shown here is data that is just reported from PGPD and does not contain data from the University of Maryland Police Department (UMPD), Metro Police, Maryland State Police, or Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) Police.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

Emergency preparedness is necessary in the event of a hurricane, tornado, winter storm, power outage, other utility service interruption, etc.

Regardless of the cause, it is generally recognized by emergency management experts that each one of us should take action to prepare for short-term emergencies. Depending on the specific needs of your household (such as children, senior citizens, people with special health needs, animals), you should prepare now to be self-sufficient for a period of 3 to 7 days.

The following is an overview of general emergency preparedness procedures that should be followed in case of any type of emergency:

  • Remain advised of current conditions - Follow recommendations from government agencies, utilities, other service providers, and the news media.
  • The City of College Park - City staff provide Emergency and Continuity of Operations planning for the City to ensure response to an emergency as well as maintenance of City services should a disaster or emergency strike the City.  Subscribe to the City’s email list and follow the City on Facebook and Twitter for real-time updates.
  • University of Maryland (UM) Early Warning Siren - UMD maintains a system of emergency warning sirens which are located on the campus but can be heard throughout the City of College Park. The system is tested on the first Wednesday of each month at 11:55 a.m. The sirens may sound when there is an imminent hazard such as a tornado. Should you hear these sirens at a time other than the monthly test day, you should take shelter immediately and seek current news and information by tuning into Radio 1640 AM, the local news or by visiting www.umpd.umd.edu
  • You may register to receive text messages for emergency alerts and public safety announcements from Prince George's County at Alert Prince George's.

ARE YOU PREPARED?

Weather and other emergencies or disasters may strike at any time.  Make sure you, your family or household are prepared and have plans in place in case of an emergency.

  • Create a plan - know what to do, who to contact and where to meet during an emergency.  Ready.gov  and Prince George's County Office of Emergency Management have lots of guides and planning kits to help you create and develop yours.
  • Be prepared at home for short-term emergencies. Restock your home emergency supply kit with sufficient nonperishable food and water, a battery-powered radio, flashlight and batteries to last for 3 to 7 days.

FIRE SAFETY TIPS

Tips courtesy of the National Fire Protection Association and the Center for Campus Fire Safety Student Committee.

Talk to your Landlord about Fire Safety

It is important that students living off-campus understand fire risks and know the preventative measures that could save their lives.

Some questions you can ask your current or potential landlord about fire safety:
Does every room have a smoke alarm?
What is the power supply to the detector? (hardwire | battery | both)?
Who provides the battery replacements?
Does the off-campus housing have sprinklers and fire extinguishers?
Is there an escape plan in place?
Is there a designated meeting place outside your building?
Can the exit doors be opened from the inside - without a key?

Be Choosy Where you Live
Smoke alarms and sprinkler systems save lives. When it comes time to look for housing, don’t choose just ANY place. Check out a number of locations to make sure the room or apartment you want has WORKING smoke detectors installed. If you’re looking on-campus, be sure your building has a fire sprinkler system.

On and Off Campus Fire Safety Tips

Kitchen Fire Safety
If a fire starts in your stove, toaster oven or microwave, keep the door closed and unplug the unit until the fire burns out. Do NOT use water on a grease fire – it only makes the fire worse and hot oil can splatter and burn you. If you’re sleepy or drowsy, don’t cook a meal that requires turning on appliances.

Get out of the building when a Fire Alarm goes off
Fire doubles in volume every 30-60 seconds. In just a couple of minutes, an entire room or multiple rooms can be engulfed in flames and smoke. When the fire alarm sounds, get out of the building - FAST and NEVER, no matter what, delay or go back inside the building to get your “things”. Ask yourself, is a cell phone or computer more important than your life? No way. You can always buy a new cell phone; but you can’t buy your life back.

Use Flameless Candles
Candles are one of the leading causes of fire in campus housing. Because of this, most colleges and universities won’t allow them in dorms. If you want to use candles off-campus try flameless candles. They’re cheap, scented and come in a million shapes and colors.

Don't cover Lamps with Scarves
Covering lamps with a scarf might look nice and create a great atmosphere in your room, but it’s also a huge fire problem. Keep all materials that can catch fire away from your lamps.

Turn off Appliances
When you leave a room or apartment, ALWAYS turn off the stove, iron, curling irons and other appliances. Leaving these things “on” causes the appliance to overheat and spark a fire. Taking a couple seconds to hit the “off” switch will help keep your apartment and dorm room free of fire, and save your life and the life of your friends.
