The Tree & Landscape Board works with the City’s Department of Public Works to:

  • Enhance the beauty of College Park.

  • Plant, maintain, or remove trees, shrubs and ground covers in or upon public ways or public areas within the city limits.

  • Ensure that the trees, shrubs, and ground covers located on public property are properly installed, maintained, and removed, if necessary.

  • Prevent landscape conditions that may result in injury to persons using the public ways and areas or damage to public property.

  • Limit the spread of diseases or pests.

  • Encourage citizens to adopt practices that promote and protect healthy trees, shrubs and ground covers on private land.

 Projects:

Pilot Tree Inventory:

In the fall of 2007, the Tree & Landscape Board spearheaded the city’s first Tree Inventory. According to Brenda Alexander, deputy director of College Park’s Department of Public Works, having better information about the health of the trees on city property will improve the department’s ability to budget for tree maintenance and replacement.

Vegetation Management Plan:

Under the direction of City officials and the City Council, the Tree & Landscape Board produced the City’s first Vegetation Management Plan, which outlines the current practices performed by the Department of Public Works regarding turf maintenance, landscape maintenance and weed control.

Plantings & Beautification:

Members of the Tree & Landscape Board often collaborate with other City Committees, such as the Committee for a Better Environment, to conduct plantings throughout College Park.
